After making headlines for a horrible error in his team’s Africa Cup of Nations game against Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast goalie Badra Ali Sangare learnt on Monday of the loss of his father.

“It is with great sadness that the Ivorian national team learned of the death in the night of January 16-17 of the father of goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare,” said the Ivorian Football Federation in a statement.

Max-Alain Gradel’s father died on the eve of the event, and the news comes as a shock to the team.

With his goal in the Ivory Coast’s opening 1-0 triumph over Equatorial Guinea, Gradel appeared to be in tears.

As a result of Sylvain Gbohouo’s doping ban, Sangare has taken up the goalkeeping duties for the Elephants at this tournament.

He then dropped the ball, allowing Sierra Leone’s Alhaji Kamara to equalise.

After that, Sangare suffered an injury and was forced to leave the game, enabling Serge Aurier to finish in goal.
